President Trump can’t stop US coal plants from retiring

More U.S. coal-fired power plants were shut in President Donald Trump’s first two years than were retired in the whole of Barack Obama’s first term, despite the Republican’s efforts to prop up the industry to keep a campaign promise to coal-mining states.

The Republicans have recently been trying to revive the U.S. coal industry through a number of different strategies including the roll back of rules on climate change. Despite these efforts, cheap natural gas and the rising use of renewable power like solar and wind have forced many coal-fired power plants shut across the country. So far under the first two years of President Trump’s regime, 3,400 MW of coal-fired plants generation have been shut. During Barack Obama’s entire first term this shutdown figure was 14,900 MW.
