Ever since the U.S. lifted a 40-year ban on crude oil exports in 2015, U.S. oil tankers have landed in more than 30 countries. As per a weekly report by the EIA, the U.S. exported 7.3 million barrels per day (Mbd) of crude oil and petroleum products in the first half of 2018, when exports of crude oil and hydrocarbon gas liquids (HGL) set record monthly highs. Exports of crude oil during the period rose ~80% to 1.8 Mbd, surpassing HGL’s 1.57 Mbd. Among destinations, China imports of U.S. crude oil more than doubled to 376,000 bpd, while imports by South Korea and India also increased significantly during this period.
