The U.S. Commerce Department recently submitted results of a national security investigation into uranium imports to the White House. However, the results and recommendations were not disclosed to the public. The investigation began in July 2018 under Section 232, following petition by Ur-Energy Inc and Energy Fuels Inc in Jan. 2018, complaining that subsidized foreign competitors, including Russia and Kazakhstan, have caused them to cut capacity and lay off workers. The Uranium companies proposed two remedies in their petition – requiring that domestic uranium supply 25% of the U.S. market and a requirement for U.S. federal utilities and agencies to buy U.S. uranium. Energy Fuels and Ur-Energy are quietly preparing for a ramp up in production should the white house set a quota on Uranium imports or impose tariffs. President Trump has 90 days to decide whether to act upon the recommendations.
