China’s trade surplus with the United States reached a record US$31 billion in August 2018, despite hefty tariffs recently imposed on Chinese goods. This came just after U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to impose another US$267 billion worth of tariffs on Chinese imports that would include virtually all the goods China imports to the U.S. The potential tariffs would be over and above punitive levies on US$50 billion in Chinese goods already in place apart from another US$200 billion that Trump has said to be levied soon. The Trump administration has argued that tariffs on Chinese goods would force China to trade on more favorable terms with the U.S.
